Alchi, Unlike most of the villages in Ladakh, Alchi is located on lowland and is around 70km towards the west of Leh. Sitting graciously on the banks of the enchanting Indus River, this quaint village is among the must visit villages.

Home to the oldest monastery in Ladakh, the Alchi Monastery, which is ladakh’s most valuable heritage, this hamlet is very rich in vegetation, and probably green will be only visible colour while visiting this village. Holding high historical and cultural essence, this sleepy village on the banks of Indus River offers an array of places to visit within the Leh Ladakh. On the list, there are Sumstek Temple, Vairocana Temple, Lo Tsawa Temple, Mnajushree Temple, Stupas, and several others.

DU-KHANG

Du-Khang, meaning assembly hall, is an integral part of many Tibetan and Ladakhi monasteries, serving as a sacred space for prayers, rituals, and religious gatherings, adorned with intricate murals and religious artifacts that reflect the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the region.

ALCHI MONASTERY

Alchi Monastery, nestled on the banks of the Indus River in Ladakh, is renowned for its ancient murals, exquisite frescoes, and unique Kashmiri-influenced architectural style, providing a captivating glimpse into the cultural and artistic heritage of the region.

LOTSAWA LA-KHANG

Lotsawa La-khang, dedicated to Rinchen Zangpo, the translator of Sanskrit Buddhist texts into Tibetan, is a Buddhist temple in the village of Alchi. The idol of Shakyamuni, the Sakya clan sage, is placed in this temple. The idol of the droopy-eared Rinchen Zangpo is clearly visible on its right side. The walls of the temple are embellished with beautiful and old paintings of Shakyamuni.

TEMPLE OF MANJUSHRI

Manjusri is well known for his wisdom. He is able to understand thoroughly everything that happens, as well as fond of teaching and leading others. He was the master of seven Buddhas, including Shakyamuni. His knowledge is every wide and without limits, hence he was also called ‘great knowledge’.

SUM-TSEK

Sum-tsek is one of the main temples inside Alchi Monastery. Photography is not allowed inside the temple. Exterior of the Temple has beautiful wood carvings and depicts Lord Buddha in different forms.
