TSO-KAR LAKE

"KNOWN AS WHITE LAKE"

The Tso Kar (White Lake or Salty Lake) is one of the three important high altitude lakes in the Ladakh region. Located at an altitude of 4660 meters (15280 feet) in the Changthang area of the South Eastern part of Ladakh, it is the smallest of all three lakes.

The salty Tso Kar is located in about 95 km northwest of the Lake Tsomoriri in Rupshu Valley. It is called as White or Salty Lake as numbers of salt dunes are deposited all over the shore of the lake. Groups of nomads can be seen all over the region and a considerable number of livestock including sheep, horse and yak are also seen grazing around the lake. The wetland of Tso Kar is also home to resident herd of Tibetan Wild Ass and numerous numbers of migratory birds. Beautiful Lake Tso Kar is a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife lovers. The views at Tso Kar, just as breathtaking as they are during the day, can be even more exciting during the night, with the mountains around shining in the glow of moonlight.

The lake looks up to an endless sea of mountains. The Lake has bewitching beauty that keeps you hooked all your life. Tsokar can be considered as hidden gem of ladakh.

Tso Kar hosts varied flora and fauna attracting a horde of bird watchers, especially during the migration season. The common birds found here are Brahmin ducks, bar-headed geese and great crested grebe. The main attraction, however, is the black-necked crane. The black-necked cranes, known for their fidelity, come to Tso Kar to lay eggs. There are only a few yak sheds, a monastery and a couple of nomadic families in the surrounding. The view of the lake at night in the moonlight is even more stunning.
